Backstreet Boys v. One Direction

In the 60’s female fans swooned over the tunes of the Beatles. It was the British invasion of America and ushered in the era of the boy bands from Britain. America always had its Beach Boys, Jackson 5 and single acts like Elvis Presley to catch the female fans attention. In the 90’s, the battle for the fans attention was at its peak with boy bands such as NSync, Boys II Men, Take that, 98 Degrees, Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block (NKOTB), among others. Arguably, the reigning champion out of the 90’s was Backstreet Boys. In the new millennium the reigning boy band champion is undoubtedly One Direction. If these boy bands had played in the same era, who would reign supreme? Let’s compare Backstreet Boys to One Direction.

1. Who’s in the band
Backstreet Boys – were formed in 1993 and the members hail from Orlando, Florida. The members of the group are Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, A. J. McLean, Howie Dorough and Kevin Richardson.
One Direction – were formed in 2010 and are an English-Irish band from London. The members are Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. Zayn Malik left One Direction in March 2015 and apparently is starting up a solo career. The band was formed out of the British singing television show The X-Factor.

2. Who has the most albums?
Backstreet Boys have released more albums than One Direction. The group’s debut album was the self titled, Backstreet Boys (1996). They released their second album Backstreet’s Back (1997), and followed with their third album Millennium (1999) and Black & Blue (2000). They took a break and regrouped in 2005 with the album Never Gone. They would end up releasing two other albums as a quartet Unbreakable (2007) and This Is Us (2009) and then one last album In a World Like This (2013).
In comparison, the relatively new One Direction has released only four albums, Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013) and the recently released Four (2014).

3. Who has the most hit songs?
The Backstreet Boys longevity has resulted in the band selling over 130 million records worldwide. They are the best -selling boy band in recorded history. Their hits include I’ll Never Break Your Heart, Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely, More Than That, As Long as You Love Me, Quit Playing Games (With My Heart),Larger Than Life and the ever famous, I Want It That Way.
One Direction also fired off a number of hits, including Gotta be you, One thing, Live while we’re young, Little things, Story of my life, Drag me down and probably their most famous hit, What makes you beautiful.
In the end, Backstreet Boys takes the cake owing to their longevity as a boy band, but time will tell if One Direction will be able to continue spinning the hits in the future.
