Duran Duran

One of the most successful bands in the era of the 80’s was the English rock bank Duran Duran. This band was formed in 1978 and consisted of keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, drummer Roger Taylor, guitarist Andy Taylor and lead singer Simon Le Bon. While there were some changes over the years, these main members lead Duran Duran to their most successful line-up.

Duran Duran lead in the music video assisted era of MTV and drove what has been dubbed the “Second British Invasion” of the US. In their heyday, they had 14 singles in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and over 20 hit singles in the Billboard Hot 100. Collectively, Duran Duran has sold more than 100 million records.

Their music videos were considered advent guard and riske. their catchy tunes with model good looks catapulted them to fame in the 80’s. Their musical talent was apparent and recognized as the band won two Brit Awards in 2004 including for Outstanding Contribution to Music and two Grammy Awards, and an MTV Video Music Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Many of the band’s video’s including riske elements such as partial nudity and sexuality. The videos quickly became popular in the early 1980s on the video dominate music channel MTV. Duran Duran hit their popularity in 1982 with the release of their second album Rio which scored four UK Top Twenty singles including “Hungry Like The Wolf”, “Save A Prayer”, and “Rio”. Their popularity spread from the UK to Australia, Japan, and US. So great was their presence in the 80’s that Diana, the Princess of Wales declared Duran Duran as her favourite band. Duran Duran were dubbed with the name the “Fab Five” which was a tribute to the second British Invasion and a comparison to the Beatles who were affectionately known as the the Fab Four. They continued to make albums post the 80’s but their music was received with mixed reviews. Duran Duran will forever be known as that band from the 80’s.
